ŠKODA Superb Estate crowned Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year 2027

​The ŠKODA Superb Estate SE L 2.0 TDI 193PS DSG 4x4 has taken top honours and been crowned Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year 2027, along with scooping wins in two other categories: Caravan weight 1600kg - 1700kg and Family Towcars.

The ŠKODA Superb Estate impressed the judges with its wonderfully smooth ride, effortless driveability and high levels of comfort. Its suspension did an excellent job of absorbing the undulations transmitted from the caravan, helping to deliver a composed and reassuring towing experience. The judges concluded that the ŠKODA Superb Estate continues to set the benchmark for what makes a great towcar.

Judges said: The Skoda Superb is no stranger to Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar honours. A multiple class winner in the past and previous overall winner, Skoda can add more gongs to its trophy cabinet as this year the Superb took two category wins and the overall title. Here, in 2.0-litre TDI four-wheel drive guise, the Superb romped off with the win as it ticked every single box. It made light work of towing, remained calm and controlled, it had gutsy diesel power, excellent ride quality, four-wheel drive traction, class-leading boot space and it’s engaging enough to drive whilst remaining refined. It's a hugely accomplished towcar.

The Škoda Superb Estate wasn't the only Škoda vehicle to scoop an award at the Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year 2027, with the Škoda Kodiaq IV Sportline 1.5 TSI 204PS DSG scooping the award for 'Caravan weight 1700kg - 1800kg'

Judges said: Tested in plug-in hybrid form, the Kodiaq had decent acceleration – particularly in the 40-60mph acceleration test – while braking outperformed many other entrants. During the most arduous tests, it remained stable and controlled; add in a comfortable interior, excellent visibility and door large mirrors, it was an easy decision to make it a class winner.

The results of the competition were announced at the Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year Awards ceremony, held at the Royal Automobile Club in London on 18 September.

How the Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year Awards are judged

The Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year is the longest-running towcar testing competition in the leisure vehicle industry. This year 42 vehicles were assessed.

Vehicles entered by manufacturers must be capable of towing a trailer weighing 750kg or more and be on sale on 1 October 2026.

The vehicles were split into categories according to caravan weight, making it easier for potential buyers to identify which cars are suitable for towing their caravans. There were also award categories for Pick-Up Towcars, Family Towcars, Large Family Towcars, Electric Towcars, Plug-in Hybrid Towcars and Luxury Towcars. The Scrutineering team checks each vehicle before it is assessed by the Caravanability, Technical and Driving judges. The caravanability assessment considers the practical aspects of using each vehicle for touring, including boot capacity, towball height, towing information and the ability to accommodate equipment commonly carried on a caravan holiday. The vehicles are then paired with caravans ballasted to 85% of the vehicle's kerbweight, or the vehicle's towing limit where that is lower. Technical judges measure acceleration and braking performance using specialist equipment. Driving judges assess each combination at UTAC Millbrook across a range of conditions. Testing includes gradients, hill starts, downhill braking, high-speed stability, reversing, comfort, visibility and the ability to join fast-moving traffic. The Alpine route includes a 17% hill start and 26% downhill braking test, while testing on the high-speed bowl allows judges to assess how vehicles respond to efforts to induce instability. Throughout the week of assessment, the vehicles are put through their paces across the proving ground’s varied and demanding test routes.
