Furrows offers ongoing emergency support

Community First Responders in the Oswestry area have received the backing of a local motor dealership as part of an ongoing initiative.

The Oswestry and District Group have taken delivery of a second vehicle from Furrows of Oswestry, in Whittington Road, to help them continue their vital support service for the West Midlands Ambulance Service.

Effie Cadwallader, for the Group, received the keys for the Ford Fiesta from sales executive Nick Roberts – following a similar handover of another vehicle previously.

“Furrows have gone beyond what I could have expected in their support, offering information and providing practical help – they have been unfailingly patient and good-natured throughout,” said Effie. “I am enormously grateful, in particular to Nick for his support, and genuinely could not have completed the project without him.”

Nick said: “We are delighted to have supplied two vehicles to the Oswestry and District Community Responders – their project is one of the most important causes possible, literally saving lives, and we are extremely pleased to have been able to help them out not once, but twice now.

“As a team, Furrows of Oswestry is very proud to be associated with the Community First Responders, and we’re sure their ongoing efforts will be invaluable when it comes to helping people across the local area.”

Oswestry and District Community Responders are volunteers who respond on behalf of the West Midlands Ambulance Service to attend life-threatening emergencies.

Following a rigorous training programme by the ambulance service, Community First Responders volunteer whatever time they have available. The running costs of the scheme have to be self-funded by the group.

If a Community First Responder is available when a 999 call is received in the locality, the ambulance service may pass on the details and ask them to respond.

They will provide treatment on the scene until the nearest available ambulance resource arrives, and volunteers attend a wide range of calls including cardiac arrest, heart attack, strokes, choking, diabetic emergencies, and traumatic emergencies. The Oswestry and District Group covers Oswestry, St Martins, Gobowen, Whittington, Ellesmere, and many of the smaller villages around Oswestry itself.
